A little less than three years ago, the recruitment of top-40 national prospect K'Lavon Chaisson played out between the Texas Longhorns and LSU Tigers, with the Bayou Bengals coming out on top. On Saturday, Chaisson has some strong opinions about whether the school has a lot of luck in it.
"It's definitely going to be a good game next week," Chaisson said on Tuesday. Obviously, those guys really strongly believe they have a chance. I do not.
"But you know what I'm saying, that's what you're supposed to do. But like it said, it's going to be a good game. "
Chaisson's comments cross over the line of confidence into the type of arrogance that so often defines the SEC superiority complex. It's the same complex that had been playing Texas Bowl in 2017 and the same complex that let Georgia think they could walk into the Sugar Bowl and assert their dominance over the Longhorns.
Things did not go as expected for either team.
And, as if was not enough, Chaisson had already shared his view of Texas junior quarterback Sam Ehlinger.
"I knew it was coming," Chaisson told Brian Holland of WGMB. "I saw it on the schedule as a recruit. I'm glad we get to go against him again. I do not really like a threat. Not taking a shot at him, but he uses his legs more than his arm. Just like high school. He has a decent arm, but it's more about his legacy. "
The Westlake took on the North Shore for the 6A Division I title, with Chaisson emerging as the game's defensive MVP in the overtime victory after Ehlinger lost a crucial fumble near the goal line. Ehlinger threw for 201 yards in that game.
Of course, Ehlinger has passed through his college, too – his 3,292 passing yards last season rank fifth in school history
So Chaisson would be wise to put on some respect for Sam Ehlinger and recall what happened to the last two SEC opponents that underestimated Texas.
