Klay Thompson expressed in 2018 that he wanted to be a “warrior for life”.
His father, Mychal Thompson, believes Klay’s life in basketball could last until he is 40.
“I said, if you really want to you can play until you’re 40, but the key to that is you have to take care of your body, as you hit your thirties,” said Mychal, telling NBC Sports Bay Area about a conversation he had with Klay.
Klay turned 31 in February. He tore his left ACL in the 2019 NBA Finals. He tore his right Achilles tendon during a 2020 practice just weeks before the Warriors began training camp this season .
Injuries have impacted Klay’s two years of strength, but Mychal noted that Klay’s position will help him recover from a long career.
“Since [Klay doesn’t] playing over the rim like Vince Carter or Russell Westbrook, he can shoot. And the shoot stays with you forever, ”Mychal said.
His advice to Klay was to train year round and train to support all movements. He told Klay it was important to keep your weight in your 30s, focus on nutrition, limit alcohol, and get rest.
“You have to maintain your body like you have an office building. Your body is your office building, right? And if you have a business, are you going to let this building fall into disrepair? To be trashed? Being abused? No! You have to take care of your office. “

Body maintenance was different in Mychal’s day with the Portland Trail Blazers and Showtime Los Angeles Lakers.
“We were playing all the games, no rest, no load management, and then the next day we have a two and a half hour practice.” A difficult practical, Mychal pointed out.
“When we get home in the afternoon, and all of our women will be complaining, ‘Damn these guys come home on the couch and sleep all day!’ Because we are exhausted from practicing!
The modern NBA has cut back on workouts, which Mychal called a “good thing.”
The changes in the NBA to take charge of the load management days, along with Klay’s determination to play at the highest level, once again makes Mychal believe his son is still many years old, joining the other greats. league stars with the same longevity goals.
“Like Lebron does, you can extend your career until your late thirties. And I expect Klay, Steph and Draymond to do just that, and play at a very high level, in their mid to late 30s, ”he said.
