On June 20, 2019, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stepped onto the podium at Barclays Center and announced that the Knicks are taking RJ Barrett as their third pick in the NBA Draft.
Barrett, in his new pink suit designed especially for drafty night, pumped both fists. His father, Rowan Barrett, hit the air.
Spike Lee, in his blue Knicks jersey, clapped wildly – on the spot to see the Brooklyn-rooted player being drafted by the Knicks.
It was all night, and it is no longer shrouded in regret. Barrett is slowly emerging as a stud after a top-to-bottom rookie season. Voters barred him from playing on both NBA All-Rookie teams in a surprise.
John Hollinger, the former Memphis Grizzlies executive who now writes for The Athletic, reshuffled the 2019 group earlier this month and moved Barrett back to No.3 behind Zion Williamson and Ja Morant.
It was an ironic twist. Hollinger had posted his All-Rookie ballots online before the voting deadline last July and kept Barrett off the top 10 rookie list.
Hollinger then wrote it down as a bad rookie crop, but his pointers had Terence Davis in the first team and Cody Martin, Cameron Johnson, Matisse Thybulle, in the second team. Barrett was not mentioned.
Voters have been urged to consider the game ahead of Orlando’s resumption. Hollinger’s measurements did not include Barrett leading the rookies in minutes (1704) before Orlando restart, was durable playing 56 of 65 games, missing a nine-game streak with a sprained ankle . Barrett has also played in the toughest media market in the NBA and as a focal point for a bad team.
Ahead of the season Barrett said he would use the snub as a motivation and it worked. Barrett’s stock is on the rise, as evidenced by Hollinger’s mea culpa placing it again at No.3.
“I think you see it, everyone sees it,” Barrett said before facing the Timberwolves on Wednesday. “I worked my butt, producing there on the court. I really don’t know what else to say. Against Miami on Monday, Barrett scored eight points – and that was news. It was the first time in 15 outings Barrett wasn’t hitting double the numbers. That’s how well it rolled.
“We made a lot of mental mistakes,” Barrett said. “We weren’t us that night.”
In March, Barrett averaged 20 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists, shooting 46.7 percent. Future All-Star is attached to his name.
“The team is improving so because of that it’s easier for me to be there for other guys because we’re playing well,” Barrett said of the 25-24 Knicks.
Barrett averaged 14.3 points as a rookie, but his percentages were below mark – with a live-shooting percentage of just 47.9, a vital number for analysis gurus like Hollinger.
A report of recognition has emerged that if you take Barrett’s left hand away, you take away his ability to slash. But Barrett, in his second season, is scrapping at will.
“It depends on the game, the team, their plans,” Barrett said. “I also think that a few games we have, it’s harder to take my left hand away. But no matter what I’m always looking to come back to.
Many of his percentages have increased from his rookie season, most notably the free throw percentage (73.1%). He had a small dip recently in his 3-point shot, settling at 33.3%. But it’s still higher than the 32% from last season.
The teams are ready to play the zone against the Knicks – in part because they dare Barrett to shoot from far. Miami closed the Knicks at the Garden with its zone on Monday.
“We worked on it,” Barrett said. “We take care of it well. We could definitely be a little better. Any type of area, they want you to come out of the paint and shoot. Anytime you can get to the middle of the sideline and make plays, it breaks down the whole area. “
Barrett’s 3-point shot will ultimately determine if he becomes an eternal All-Star because he’s an expert pilot with strength and astute movements.
And his defense became a force – ranked 13e in the NBA in the defensive standings among players who recorded 30 minutes. The players he defends shoot 42.9%.
Upon his return to Minnesota, where he had a reputation for not getting along well with younger players, Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau can take credit for Barrett’s increased defensive prowess.
