The Knicks passed day two of their shortened 2020-21 training camp Wednesday. They made a few veteran players available for interviews – certainly not the sexiest group for fans, but whatever.
We start with Elfrid Payton, who finished last season and will likely start this season as a starting point keeper.
I asked Elfrid Payton if he was convinced he was going to start after all the noise of a new PG coming in. “It’s not for me to choose who starts. It’s not for me to care about what other people say. I control what I can control.”

It would take a miracle for Payton not to end up in the starting PG role on Opening Night. It’s the Knicks, after all, and Elf is the Knicks’ go-to vet who starts PG. I have an irrational hatred of the game of Elf, but it is not that great. Either way … don’t play him alongside Julius Randle, though.
Another contender for the coveted role of “Veteran Guard Who Gets Too Many Minutes” is Austin Rivers. Doc’s son has said all the right things to bring the garden back to the fore.

Austin Rivers brings up the 2018-19 Clippers when asked what it would take to make the Knicks an attractive destination:

While some cynics as Jeffrey Bellone noted that Rivers probably signed with the Knicks because they promised him more playing time, he surely hits a deal with fans who are fed up with the stars jumping into easier situations. Hi, Austin. I’ll cheer you on until you play too much while Immanuel Quickley is stapled to the bench.
Shooting guard Alec Burks is all about the MSG aura.
Seriously, it’ll be a little sad for the veterans who only play here for one season if they never get the full experience of Garden, the fans and everything in between. It will be like the two years in the ’70s when the Yankees remodeled Yankee Stadium and had to play all of their home games at Shea.
Hopefully we will have more interesting players tomorrow. Rivers was cool, however.
