ST. LOUIS – Social media conspiracy theorists have been active with Cubs star Kris Bryant out of the starting lineup for the past two games against the Cardinals. Surely, his absence is somehow related to the next trade deadline.
“My decision making is a broad spectrum for sure,” Cubs manager David Ross said ahead of Thursday’s 3-2 loss at Busch Stadium. “But in this scenario, that was not a factor.”
Don’t expect these words to silence the rumor mill.
There are eight days left before the July 30 deadline and the Cubs remain in the sales position. After a 3-4 record on a road trip in Arizona and St. Louis, the North Siders now return home in fourth place in the National League Central, behind the first-place Brewers by nine games.
The next seven days – consisting of a weekend with the D-backs and four games against the Reds – could very well be the last time some grassroots players perform for the home team ahead of the Wrigley Field faithful.
This includes Bryant, who has rested heavy legs (Ross’s phrase) and / or a tired right hamstring (Chicago’s official description of the injury). The manager said in his mind he was seeing the star in the lineup again on Friday. There are plenty of teams in the running who will want a final look at Bryant before a potential trade.
