Kris Bryant confirms: sucks to be in business rumors all the time

I cannot ignore my own role in the business rumor ecosystem. As long as sports allow exchanges, we, the fans, will be interested. They’re one of the most transformative aspects of the sport, so all the little bits and pieces we can get on what CAN happen, well, that’s going to interest us. I don’t really expect fans to apologize, but I still think we can recognize the humanity at stake for the guys at the center of the rumors.

I’m not sure that’s more true for any player in recent memory than Kris Bryant, who has been the subject of intense business rumors dating back two years now, with nothing to show other than a cascade of subsequent rumors.

Bryant was on the Red Line Radio podcast and spoke about the impact all rumors can have on a guy’s psyche when he’s just trying to play baseball. It’s just not realistic to expect a guy to disintegrate for years and have no impact on his enjoyment of the game. So that’s a bummer, but yeah, everything. the noise made it harder for Bryant to play baseball:

Bryant doesn’t like all commercial rumors. No surprise there, and I can understand. And to be even fairer to him, the pandemic, the struggles in 2020, the injuries of the past two years, the overall performance of the team and the service time grievance … he had plenty of reasons not to. just be able to go out and have fun playing baseball.

Sadly, the reality is that Bryant is now reduced to one more year of team control over a team that is clearly trying to cut as much pay as possible, while in return getting useful long-term coins in return. Trade rumors are not going away, and it will continue until the deal deadline if Bryant is still around by then. Sucky reality indeed.
