While reports suggested that Apple would launch an iPad Air with an OLED display next year, that no longer appears to be the case. According to a new investor note from reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo seen by 9to5MacApple now plans to stick with LCD technology in 2022.
Kuo reported on Apple’s plans to switch the iPad Air to OLED in March, explaining that mini-LED technology would be reserved for high-end “Pro” devices due to its higher price and lower price. better protection against burns.
In today’s report, however, Kuo says the company “canceled plans to launch an iPad Air OLED in 2022 because performance and cost could not meet Apple’s requirements.” Therefore, Kuo expects the iPad Air to continue using TFT-LCD technology in 2022.
Apple first adopted mini-LED technology in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro released earlier this year and is also expected to arrive soon on the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. According to Kuo, Apple will also launch an 11-inch iPad Pro with mini-LEDs in 2022.
Then the analyst says that “Lighter, thinner, and bendable designs are the main long-term trends for tablet-like products over the next 3-5 years.” Apple would continue to “research and develop new display technologies for tablet-type products,” more details are unclear.
Finally, in line with expectations that the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air will soon switch to mini-LEDs, Kuo says MacBooks will be the main driver of mini-LED shipments for the foreseeable future. Kuo reported in March that Apple could add mini LEDs to the MacBook Air as early as 2022.
