“Media Buzz” host Howard Kurtz had a firm response Thursday to a suggestion from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y. that Congress should “understand how we come to terms with our media environment” after the riot last week on Capitol Hill.
During a lengthy Instagram live stream on Tuesday night, Ocasio-Cortez responded to a question about whether lawmakers had discussed “truth and reconciliation or media education initiatives” by saying: ” there is absolutely a commission under discussion, but it seems to be more investigative in style. … so I think it’s an interesting concept for us to explore. “
Kurtz responded during an appearance on “The Daily Briefing” with host Dana Perino.
HOWARD KURTZ: I don’t like to hear a politician use that kind of language. It is not a role of government. There is a reason the press is covered by the Very First Amendment. Now it’s okay for a congressman to blow up the media. President Trump is known to do this from time to time. But I don’t want a federal commission to decide what is wrong.
Now, there is a lot of misinformation going around right now, especially as a result of the [Capitol] insurrection and impeachment. But the way to counter this is to report the facts. So I think anything else would be a dangerous or difficult road for Democrats to follow …
Keeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in mind, there is no legislation being drafted here. She talks about discussions, and [for] all her fame on social networks, she is still a backbench MP.

And let us also remember, Dana, that passions are strong. On that same Instagram video … she shared how she thought she was going to die during the siege on Capitol Hill. So she had a very close call, so I’m ready to take a little break. I don’t think she necessarily thought through all of the implications that are suggested here.
