Washington quarterback Kyle Allen was sent off from Sunday’s game against the Giants with an apparent left leg injury.

Allen stepped back to pass late in the first quarter when his leg was struck by Giants safety Jabrill Peppers’ leg. Peppers had been knocked down during the blitz and his leg was whipping Allen’s with enough force to create what looks like a pretty serious injury.

Washington will now be quarterback to Alex Smith, who knows all too well about serious leg injuries. We certainly hope that Allen’s illness is not as bad as the one that kept Smith out for almost two years.

The Giants have a 10-0 lead, but Washington was on their turf when Allen failed on a first down. Peppers was penalized for unnecessary roughness, so Smith took over on another first down.

UPDATE 1:57 PM ET: Allen was sent off with what the Washington football team officially calls an ankle injury.
