Kyle Crick's season is over thanks to an argument that turned physical with a teammate. After an altercation at the clubhouse with fellow Pirates Felipe Vazquez on Monday, Pirates pitcher Kyle Crick underwent an end-of-season surgery to repair the right-handed starter's right foot tendons.
The two men fought at the Oracle Park clubhouse before facing the Giants, which the Pirates defeated 6-4. Both players were fined an "undisclosed amount" for their actions after the fight. The statement issued by the the team says that "the behavior violated the contracts of the players", which resulted in fines.
Neal Huntington, executive vice president of the team and chief executive, issued his own statement on the incident:
"The behavior of these two players last night is unacceptable, inconsistent with the standards expected of a Major League player and will not be tolerated by the organization."
Crick commented on the situation saying that there was "a lot of bickering".
"Punches have been thrown," he said, claiming that Vazquez had fisted first. "At some point, you have to defend yourself and start to reject.It's one of those offers where he is unhappy.It's two losers in this case.Nobody can win by fighting a teammate.It's just an unfortunate deal. "
Crick added that while it is terrible to be injured off the field during the season, it is something that is built and now both can overcome their disagreements.
"In a way, I think that a fight like this can speed up the process because we've sort of eliminated it. We quarreled a bit, and I think that Is something that we can easily get done with mutual respect, "he said.
The 26-year-old should be fully recovered before spring training, but for now, baseball will have to take a back seat.
