On every line-up led by LeBron James, there is still a debate about who is the No. 2 player. For the Miami Heat, it was Dwyane Wade and, on the Cleveland Cavaliers, it was Kyrie Irving.
But for the Los Angeles Lakers, the answer has not been so clear. Originally, it would be Brandon Ingram, and even if it showed lightning, there had been many evenings where it was Kyle Kuzma and, in some games, even Lonzo Ball.
On a list where the second, third and fourth best players are all under 23, it has been difficult to find a consistent option behind James. Thus, the Lakers have more than ever counted on a collective effort and left with the warm hand.
The strategy paid off during a match, with the team at one point reaching fourth place in the Western Conference standings. Kuzma thinks that naming a second option would have been detrimental to what the Lakers are trying to do and highlighted the group's efforts, via Dave McMenamin of ESPN:
"It will always be a collective group," said Kuzma. "Some nights, I have nights where I go. A few nights B.I. That's how basketball works. So, I will not necessarily call the second option, B.I. the second option. It must be a collective effort. "
It's a feeling shared by the whole team since James arrived. Head coach Luke Walton was one of the first to say that there should be no hierarchy in the young Lakers core.
Although this approach may have turned against Ingram, which has been closed for the season, Ball is probably facing the same fate and Kuzma is trying to come back after a sprained ankle. Meanwhile, James plays reduced minutes.
This made the season so disappointing that it was all the more difficult for the Lakers with a reduced crew.
