Nothing like a 1-2-5-7 double play to welcome Kyle Schwarber into the Boston Red Sox outfield.
Schwarber made his field debut for the Red Sox on Monday, starting at left field against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park after playing the designated hitter in his first six games for Boston.
That start took an eventful turn in the fifth inning when Rangers’ Yonny Hernandez attempted a close game with runners on first and third and one out. Here’s what happened next:
To recap: Third baseman Rafael Devers hit Nick Solak on the third baseline, then crossed the infield to Hernandez, who was stuck between first and second with Jose Trevino at second.
Devers chased Hernandez to second base, where Schwarber, who had come in from left field to cover second, applied the tag for the end of the inning.

According to Alex Speier of the Boston GlobeSchwarber’s tag on Hernandez was the first withdrawal of his infield career, excluding his 26 games as a receiver with the Chicago Cubs.
The play helped thwart a Rangers rally and keep the Red Sox in the lead, as Devers showed great awareness of the game. But it was also encouraging to see Schwarber getting involved and not looking worse after returning from hamstring strain earlier this month.
Schwarber took training reps at first base during his rehab, so acquiring the MLB trade deadline from the Red Sox could be involved in more double play in the future.
