Kyle Shanahan is stingy on officially naming the 49ers’ Week 1 starting quarterback, but he and Jimmy Garoppolo left big clues on Wednesday.
Among them:
• Although he won’t reveal it, Shanahan has said he has a “pretty good idea” that will start against the Lions. “I’ve always had a pretty good idea,” said the 49ers head coach, who has said for months that Trey Lance will struggle to dethrone Garoppolo before the regular season begins.
• Shanahan said Lance has a skill set that allows him to participate in games and take situation photos “and that’s what we worked on with him”. Shanahan wouldn’t say if this type of situation would happen against Detroit and that “we’ll do it when we think it helps.”
• Shanahan and Garoppolo cited the New Orleans Saints, who have dusted quarterback Taysom Hill in their offense for the past three seasons. Garoppolo, in fact, chatted with former Saints quarterback Drew Brees when the team was in Southern California last week, and the two specifically discussed what it was like sporadically breaking out of matches when a younger, more mobile quarterback enters.
“It’s something that I wasn’t really used to, I guess you could tell,” Garoppolo said. “Just the in and out part. So I was trying to choose his brain, how he handled it.
