49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance showed coach Kyle Shanahan “some good and some bad” in Saturday night’s preseason opener. We do not know when he will be more likely to be good, bad or otherwise with the attack of the first team.
Shanahan told reporters on Sunday that Lance will get more first-team reps when the time is right. So when is it for?
“I don’t know,” Shanahan said. “I didn’t really define that for myself either. Just when I think it feels good, when he looks ready, when I think the team looks ready. I mean, we’ll keep mixing it up in there. But I don’t intend to do it completely. But Trey, what he showed in this game is, you know, I wish I could have left them there longer. I know he loves to play and has only been able to play one game in over a year, but I think it was good for him to come out. I think he started well, got a little excited at times, which he does. And you’re a little excited, some of your technique and stuff you lose will be fun to watch with him. Trey is a guy who is hard on himself and likes to correct things and since we have him he is very good at correcting mistakes.
An error occurred with one of the four bags he took. Shanahan was ready to pin this one on the quarterback for failing to get rid of the ball.
“I think the worst was the one in the red zone,” Shanahan said. “They did an all-out blitz and we were in an empty formation and he has to get rid of that on his hot throws. So it was the main thing that was on him. On the others you can always get rid of it when someone isn’t protecting themselves for too long, but I think it would have been difficult, especially in the low and the distance we were in. But there was one that he definitely needed to get rid of just because of the blitz they brought.
It’s all part of the learning process for Lance. And that’s part of the right balance the 49ers find between leaning on the veteran they hope to eventually replace with Lance and rolling the dice with the rookie.
Lance has two more preseason games and plenty of practice over the next four weeks, before the 49ers decide whether to stick with the announced plan of pitching Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 1 against the Lions or give Lance the concert.
