Rookie quarterback Trey Lance got his first snap with the first team offense in one of this week’s training camp practices and the game was a run designed specifically in the playbook for the first round pick.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday it wouldn’t be his last and that there would be times when Lance would be on the field during the regular season as well. Shanahan knew it would generate a reaction, so he was quick to add that he’ll be playing in situational packages rather than having the offensive path instead of Jimmy Garoppolo.
“Trey is will play this year,”Shanahan said, via Cam Inman of San José Mercury News. I know everyone is going to be rushing to Twitter now, but from a situational perspective, he’s going to play. It doesn’t mean it will start, but it will have coins. . . . He’ll get reps with those.
Situational games might be where things start for Lance, but they’re going to end with the starting quarterback at some point. How long does that happen will be the biggest question around the 49ers until it does.
