PARIS – After a temper tantrum in Italy last week, Nick Kyrgios, ranked 36th, has withdrawn from the French Open on Friday. ATP stated that the Australian player had invoked the disease as a reason.
Kyrgios failed at the Italian Open after an explosion of anger. Behind Norwegian qualifier Casper Ruud on lap 2, he broke his racket into clay and threw a bottle of water. Then he took a chair and threw it on the ground.
He was fined and lost ATP points but escaped suspension.
The controversial withdrawal of Kyrgios comes just days after posting a video in which he said that the French Open "was zero" compared to Wimbledon, where he had recently trained.
In 2015, Kyrgios insulted Stan Wawrinka with rude comments during a match in Montreal. He was fined $ 12,500 and suspended for 28 days. He also drew criticism for his decision not to participate in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio due to a conflict with a leader of the Australian team, and for retaliating against players retirees who gave advice.
Kyrgios was to start his campaign at Roland Garros against Cameron Norrie, of England.
The tournament starts on Sunday.
