Kyrie Irving is now missing training for the Brooklyn Nets.
After being barred from attending team media day in person due to his status in violation of New York City’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement, the Nets goalie missed practice Tuesday for the same reason. He will likely continue to do so as long as he violates city protocols.
Head coach Steve Nash addressed Irving’s status after the team’s first practice of the season at his Brooklyn facility on Tuesday.
“I’m not really worried about anything,” Nash said, according to ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk. “We’re just trying to work every day. We came in today and had a great training and we’ll do the same tomorrow, and that’s kind of where I stop.”
When asked if the team were considering moving their practices outside of New York City, where Irving would be allowed to go regardless of his immunization status, Nash said no.
“No, this is our home,” Nash said. “This is where we are going to train and we have almost a whole group.”
Irving has repeatedly refused to speak about his vaccine status amid reports that he is not vaccinated and social media likes and follows conspiracy theories linking the COVID-19 vaccine to secret societies and satan. The NBA does not impose vaccines on players, but local regulations in New York and San Francisco require Nets, Knicks and Warriors players to be vaccinated to gain access to indoor public gatherings, which include practices and games. matches.
Under an agreement between the NBA and the players’ union, Irving and any other player who violates a municipality’s COVID-19 vaccination requirements will lose 1 / 91.6th of his salary for each game missed. For Irving, that’s $ 381,000 per game. If he were to miss Brooklyn’s 41 home games due to his vaccine status, that would represent $ 15.6 million lost based on his salary of $ 34.9 million.
