Instead of playing for the Nets on Tuesday night, Brooklyn star Kyrie Irving took part in a video call launch party for Democratic Manhattan District Attorney candidate Tahanie Aboushi.
Aboushi tweeted an image of the Zoom reunion, and Irving – who had been away from the Nets since last week – was among more than 200 volunteers and supporters who attended.
The reunion, co-hosted by actress Cynthia Nixon, began at 7 p.m. – about 40 minutes before the Nets inquired against the Denver Nuggets at Barclays Center.
Irving, 28, missed four straight games, including his team’s 122-116 win on Tuesday.
The leader’s absence is believed to be because he is upset by the U.S. Capitol Riot.
Irving has not spoken publicly since the insurgency, but on Monday night a video surfaced of him apparently partying without a mask while celebrating his sister’s birthday.
The video was not dated.
Nets chief executive Sean Marks said in a statement that the organization was aware of the video and “was reviewing the circumstances with Kyrie and the NBA to determine compliance with health and safety protocols.”
NBA COVID-19 protocols prohibit players from going to bars, lounges or clubs, or social gatherings of more than 15 people.
Irving is in the second season of a four-year, $ 136 million contract.
