NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The fourth wave of COVID-19 continues to push Louisiana hospitals to their limits.

During what has been called “the darkest days of this pandemic,” the state health department reported 2,112 patients in state hospitals on August 3, breaking the previous record of 2 069 established January 7.

The LDH also reported 4,725 new cases and 59 new deaths.

“Louisiana is in the throes of a very difficult wave of COVID-19,” Gov. John Bel Edwards said after reinstating a mask mandate. “Our health heroes are exhausted and their ability to provide care is strained. Get vaccinated, wear a mask, and help remedy the situation. The life you save can be yours.

“We are no longer providing adequate care for these patients,” Dr Catherine O’Neal said at a press conference on Monday.
