Labs with the new UltraFine LG 4K 23.7 inch display

Apple began this week to store a new 23.7-inch LG Ultra UltraFine 4G screen, which replaces LG UltraFine 4K screen of 21.5-inch, sourced from retail stores and the Apple Online Store earlier this year.

We bought one of the new 23.7-inch UltraFine screens and decided to check if it was worth the $ 700 price.

The new 4K display looks a lot like the previous-generation 4K and 5K UltraFine displays with a black plastic body with relatively thick glasses and a black aluminum stand. Like previous models, it can be mounted in VESA if you prefer.

It is larger than the original 4K UltraFine screen since it measures 23.7 inches instead of 21.5 inches, but it has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 instead of the usual 4K UltraFine. a resolution of 4096 x 2304 as the first model. It's still considered Ultra HD, however, and qualifies as 4K.

Although this screen has a 4K resolution, it is not designed to be used at the full resolution of 3840 x 1260 given its screen size of 23.7 inches, because everything that is not included in the screen is not included. there would be on the screen would be very small. Instead, it is designed to provide retinal clarity when reduced to a more reasonable resolution, such as 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1440, which we have defined.

In addition to its larger screen size, the new UltraFine display offers two Thunderbolt 3 ports instead of a single Thunderbolt 3 port, which means you can connect two of these monitors. We had no seconds on hand, but we used the chained connection with a different LG 4K display, which worked well.

You can also connect other compatible Thunderbolt 3 accessories directly to the screen, if you wish, and three additional USB-C ports. A Thunderbolt 3 cable and a USB-C cable are included. There is no webcam, but built-in stereo speakers are available, as is the previous version of LG UltraFine displays available from Apple.

The screen is sharp and vivid, it rivals that of Retina on Apple's Macs. We liked the high gloss finish despite the fact that it tends to add more dazzle. With a brightness of 500 nits, it is quite bright and, thanks to its wide range of P3 colors, all colors are rich and faithful to reality.

In the end, we had a positive impression of this display. Since you can chain two together, it can be interesting to have two if you can give the smaller size and price of $ 700, which is half the price of the UltraFine 5K display.

The 4K LG UltraFine monitor has been replaced, Apple could also replace the 5K UltraFine monitor on the horizon. The 5K monitor is out of stock on the Apple site at the present time, although its listing has not been completely removed.

Apple is also planning to return to the screens with rumors hinting that a 31.6-inch 6K screen is in preparation and should be released alongside a new Mac Pro that is expected to come out this year. Unfortunately, it would appear that Apple's 6K screen is very expensive, so it's likely to be out of reach for many Mac users who will have to rather support it on other options like LG's UltraFine screens.
