LaCie is introducing a new portable SSD that should dispel some confusion around USB-C connectivity. It's called LaCie Rugged SSD Pro and promises compatibility with modern computers with Thunderbolt 3 ports with USB-C connectors and those with non-Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports. The ports are similar, but they do not act in the same way. The Rugged SSD Pro eliminates all the approximations.
And since it bears the name "Pro", you know that this portable SSD must be good.
The new LaCie drive is built around a Seagate FireCuda NVMe SSD with a purported transfer speed of up to 2,800 MB / s when connected via Thunderbolt 3. Unfortunately, the company does not report a transfer rate when it is connected via USB. It has, however, announced another hard drive – the cheaper SSD Rugged – which uses the same FireCuda NVMe SSD but claims a maximum USB 3.1 Gen 2 speed of 950 MB / s.
The Magic JHL7440 Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 controller, announced in January 2018, makes the magic port on the Pro model particularly powerful. "The LaCie Rugged SSD Pro is the first portable device on the market to incorporate the latest Thunderbolt 3 technology." Intel's Jason Ziller alongside the introduction of the disc. "The JHL7440 controller allows LaCie to deliver unparalleled performance on Thunderbolt 3 computers and compatibility with traditional computers."
Still not clear why this SSD is useful? Imagine that you are a filmmaker / creator and have just shot hours of 8K footage that you have mounted on your new MacBook Pro – a laptop with only Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports. You arrive at a customer site where you want to transfer the sequences from your portable SSD to their Surface Book 2 – it has a USB-C interface … but it does not support Thunderbolt 3. Do not worry if your sequence is stored on a Rugged SSD Pro. The LaCie SSD is properly mounted if it is connected to the Surface Book 2 USB-C port, unlike other fast Thunderbolt SSDs.
The Rugged SSD Pro is rated IP67 for its resistance to dust and water, which makes it dustproof and able to withstand immersion in one meter of water for 30 minutes maximum. LaCie says it's a first in the industry for Thunderbolt 3 storage. It can also withstand 3-meter drops. The drive costs $ 399.99 (1 TB) and $ 699.99 (2 TB) and should begin shipping next week.
And yes, a Thunderbolt 3 USB-C cable is included in the box. You will have to hang on at least until the arrival of the USB 4.
