FRISCO, Texas –Starting right tackle La’el Collins has been suspended without pay for the next five games for violating NFL substance abuse policy, the NFL said on Friday.
Collins will be eligible to return to the Cowboys’ active roster on Monday, Oct. 18, following the team’s Week 6 game in New England.
The suspension is a blow to the Cowboys’ offense after an impressive 451-yard performance in a 31-29 loss to the Tampa Bay Bucs in Game 1 of the season Thursday.
It was Collins’ first start since 2019 after missing all of last season with a hip injury requiring surgery. He has come back healthy from his injury this year, even though he missed a few days late for training camp with a sting in his neck.
With Collins unavailable until mid-October, the Cowboys need to address their tackle depth. Ty Nsehke and Terence Steele were the main left and right tackle substitutes at camp.
A more complex alternative would be to move six-time Pro Bowl right keeper Zack Martin (currently on the Reserve / COVID-19 roster) to the right tackle, where he made two starts last season due to multiple tackle injuries. . But head coach Mike McCarthy said last week that he hopes they don’t have to do this type of line shuffle again.
