Negotiations between the Los Angeles Lakers and Tyronn Lue resulted in a deadlock without a deal, which would make him the next coach of the franchise, said ESPN sources on Wednesday.
Discussions included discussions on the contract and assistant coaching staff, sources said.
Among the Lakers, the hope of a team of Lue: Jason Kidd. He impressed management during his interview with the head coach and had a productive history with the Bucks, developing young talent.
Lue, 42, coached the Cavaliers and LeBron James from 2015-16 to 2017-18. He played six games last season after James left. Lue won a title in her first year in Cleveland and has qualified for the final the following two seasons. He was fired after scoring 0-6 early in 2018-19.
Lue had been a favorite to get the Lakers post because of his knowledge of X and O. His strong relationship with James was also considered positive. Lue impressed the team in interviews with his basketball spirit and his strategic approach to this Lakers training, sources close to the process said.
Prior to being head coach in Cleveland, Lue was the team's associate head coach for a year. He was previously assistant to the Celtics and Clippers.
Lue has played for seven teams during an 11-year career in the NBA. The 6-foot point guard averaged 8.5 points and 3.1 assists per game.
