Negotiations between the Los Angeles Lakers and Tyronn Lue ended without an agreement to make him the next head coach of the franchise, told ESPN sources close to the league.

Lue and her representatives rejected the Lakers' offer on Tuesday, league sources said. On Wednesday, the Lakers offered Lue a contract for three years and $ 18 million, after which his team withdrew from the negotiations.

According to sources, Lue's camp was looking for a five-year contract with a salary corresponding to a champion's resume.

In addition to the inability to agree on contractual terms, the Lakers have proposed several scenarios involving their favorite candidates for assistant coaches, including Jason Kidd, sources said.

The Cleveland Cavaliers still owe Lue more than $ 10 million for the payment of his contract, and accepting a contract below the market value of the Lakers could cost him money.

Several days of talks culminated Wednesday without an agreement between Lue and LeBron James, a partnership that helped Cleveland win the 2016 NBA championship.

Lue was a favorite choice of James, but Lue's championship history as a Lakers player – combined with his successful run as a Cavaliers coach – also played a significant role in the job offered by the Lakers.

Lakers advisor Kurt Rambis has taken an increasingly powerful voice in basketball and played a central role in coaching, ESPN sources told the league. His wife, Linda, works closely with team owner Jeanie Buss.

Rambis and his general manager, Rob Pelinka, interviewed Kidd for the position of head coach. They are now convinced that Kidd should be a key member of Lue's coaching staff, League sources said. They thought Kidd could have an impact on leader Lonzo Ball and they were impressed by the development of Milwaukee Bucks players during Kidd's tenure. Lue is not believed to have any objection to Kidd joining his team, but the two have not discussed the possibility directly, League sources said.

Lue's candidacy came to the fore when Monty Williams, assistant to the Philadelphia 76ers, accepted the Phoenix Suns head coach position on Friday. The coaching search began after the Lakers and coach Luke Walton separated on April 12.

Before returning Lue six games in the 2018-1919 season, he had led the Cavaliers to three consecutive appearances in the NBA finals. He was 128-83 in three seasons and over in Cleveland.

As a player, Lue competed at the Lakers Championships in 2000 and 2001.
