"I am deeply saddened for this young child's family," said Commissioner Elnahal. "We still find strong influenza activity in the state. It's not too late to get vaccinated against the flu to protect yourself and those who may not be vaccinated for medical reasons. "

It is particularly important that children, the elderly, health professionals and people with certain health problems at high risk of serious complications of the flu get vaccinated, said Commissioner Elnahal. Influenza can cause serious illness and can unfortunately be fatal, especially in these vulnerable populations.

The Department also recommends that people take the necessary precautions during this flu season: wash or disinfect hands frequently, cough and sneeze, stay at home, and call your health care provider if you are ill. (especially with a fever).

Residents can find flu vaccination clinics by calling their local health department or by visiting https://www.cdc.gov/flu/freeresources/flu-finder-widget.html.
