Lamar Jackson says he doesn’t dwell on past losses as Baltimore Ravens prepare to face Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Ahead of Sunday night’s showdown, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson played down his winless record against Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Jackson is 0-3 to Mahomes – losing to him in each of the past three seasons – while also being 30-5 (0.857) to the rest of the NFL. This is the fifth case in the past 25 years of an NFL quarterback MVP losing his first three starts to another MVP quarterback, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

“It’s not about me and Mahomes,” Jackson said after practice Wednesday. “Not to me, probably to everyone. But it’s the Ravens vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.”

Mahomes won the NFL MVP title in 2018, and Jackson went on to 2019 by becoming the league’s second unanimous selection. The only quarterbacks to lose their first four starts to another MVP quarterback were Peyton Manning and Matt Ryan. The two did it against Tom Brady.

Jackson is tied with Ryan for the worst winning percentage in NFL MVP quarterback head-to-head clashes with at least three such starts. Ryan, who is 0-5 against Brady, will face the seven-time Super Bowl champion again when the Atlanta Falcons visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

In the 34-20 loss to the Chiefs last season, Jackson amassed 97 yards, the worst in his career. He later called Kansas City “our kryptonite”.

“They beat us three times or whatever, but that’s in the past,” Jackson said Wednesday. “I don’t dwell on these losses. We arrive on Sunday night and we are going to play.”

In three games against the Chiefs, Jackson made 52.6% of his throws, averaging 170.3 passing yards per game. He threw three touchdowns without interceptions for a rating of 78.8.

In 35 games against the rest of the NFL, Jackson has managed 65.3% of his passes, averaging 192 yards per game. He recorded 65 touchdown passes and 18 interceptions for a score of 104.97.

Baltimore Pro Bowl cornerback Marlon Humphrey admitted that the Chiefs recently had the Ravens’ number.

“The way you go about changing it is to approach it the way it is: look at it head on and step into the game and just try to beat them,” Humphrey said. “It’s a great opportunity for us to go out there on Sunday night and show that we belong on the pitch with them.”
