As the New York Jets seek to chart a course forward under new head coach Robert Saleh, determining the fate of the quarterback will be one of the biggest decisions the team will ever have to make.

The Jets intend to assess the quarterbacks available in the draft before calling on Sam Darnold, but Jets running back La’Mical Perine is hopeful the team won’t change course.

During an appearance on the NFL Network, Perine said he wanted Darnold to remain the team’s starting quarterback.

“No disrespect to any of the quarterbacks in the draft, but I got the chance to play with Sam and got to be in the backfield with him so I know what he brings to the team,” Perine said. “He’s a great leader, man. We just have to put some good guns around him, and he can do very well and be one of the best quarterbacks in this league.

Darnold didn’t have a large supporting cast around him with the Jets during his first three seasons in the NFL. The Jets have gone 13-25 in 38 games with Darnold as a starter. For his career, he only completed 59.8% of his passes with 45 touchdowns and 39 interceptions. But that record isn’t entirely attributable to Darnold given the Jets’ struggles in general.

Perine only has one season to play alongside Darnold and the Jets have weathered a 1–15 campaign that saw them start the season 0-13 before securing back-to-back wins over the Los Angeles Rams and a Cleveland Browns team hit by COVID. Thanks to the loss, Perine was impressed with the way Darnold led the team and handled the circumstances.

“He’s a great vocal leader, he’s a great guy, he’s competitive and I’m ready to look forward to him,” said Perine. “I hope he’s part of our team this year as a starting quarterback.
