Lane Johnson injury: Eagles tackle right for rest of 2020 NFL season

Lane Johnson will miss the remainder of the Eagles’ 2020 NFL season.

The Philadelphia starting right tackle briefed reporters on his injury condition during a video conference Friday morning. Johnson specifically said, “The inside of my ankle collapsed.”

Yikes.

Johnson had struggled with an ankle injury he had undergone surgery at the end of August. Johnson has actually had to empty his (raw) ankle at several points during the season. He also suffered knee and shoulder injuries.

Johnson deserves credit for toughening him up as much as he could, but it’s good to see that the 30-year-old is finally on hold for the season. Such a move obviously hurts the Eagles in the short term, but it’s in the team’s best long-term interest. Johnson can now focus on his health for 2021 and beyond. He expects to have another surgery in the near future.

Johnson also said he expected Matt Pryor to take over for the right tackle. Jack Driscoll played to relieve Johnson, but the rookie tackle suffers from a knee injury that kept him on the restricted roster in Thursday’s practice. Maybe we could see Driscoll playing the right tackle if / when he can be healthy.

The Eagles’ planned starting offensive line now looks like this with the squad that would have put Jordan Mailata back in the starting lineup:

Left tackle – Jordan Mailata
Left Guard – Isaac Seumalo
Center – Jason Kelce
Right Guard – Jason Peters
Right tackle – Matt Pryor (?)
