LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Los Angeles Police Department launched an internal investigation after a police officer reported that a photo of George Floyd with the words “You take my breath away” in a format similar to the Valentine’s Day was broadcast among the police.
Police Chief Michel Moore said on Saturday that investigators will attempt to determine how the image may have entered the workplace and who may have been involved, The Los Angeles Times reported. Moore said the officer who filed the complaint will be questioned on Monday.
“Our investigation aims to determine the accuracy of the allegations while strengthening our zero tolerance for anything that has racist views,” Moore said.
Floyd, a black man, died last May after a Minneapolis policeman rested a knee on his neck as Floyd repeatedly said, “I can’t breathe. His death sparked massive protests across the country against racial injustice and police brutality.
Ben Crump, an attorney for the Floyd family, said on Monday the family was outraged.
“It’s beyond insult plus injury – it’s injury plus death. The kind of harshness and cruelty in a person’s soul required to do something like this escapes understanding – and is indicative of a much larger problem within LAPD culture, ”said Crump. . “We demand that everyone involved be held accountable for their outrageous behavior and that an apology be made immediately to the family.”
If the investigation confirms that LAPD agents were releasing the image, “people will find my anger,” said the police chief.
The Times reported that Moore also confirmed that the department is investigating two anonymous Instagram accounts that are said to be linked to department staff – including one called “Blue Line Mafia.”
