A large, brightly colored fish was discovered on an Oregon beach. Tropical fish may end up in waters as far north, according to a nearby aquarium.

The Seaside Aquarium in Seaside, Ore., Shared images of the fish on their Facebook page. In the photos, the large, brightly colored opah can be seen lying on the sand near the water’s edge.
The aquarium wrote: “A large fish, rare on the Oregon coast, was found on Sunset Beach this morning. responded quickly and retrieved the fish. It made a lot of noise at the aquarium where people were encouraged to come and take a look at this beautiful but strange fish.

The post goes on to explain that the fish will be kept at the aquarium for the next school year. It will then serve as an educational tool. Eventually, a school group will gain the opportunity to dissect the fish.

Opahs are tropical fish and are rarely spotted as far north as the coasts of Oregon. The aquarium said, however, this is not unheard of. A 97 pound opah was captured in the area in 2009.

The Facebook post concludes, “Opahs can grow to over 6 feet and weigh over 600 pounds. They inhabit pelagic waters (that is, they live in the open ocean), tropical and temperate waters where they feed on krill and squid. “
