Large selection of experts in 2019: overvalued and underrated teams and expected order of arrival

[ad_1]

The Big 12 does not have one but two potential candidates for college football playoffs for the 2019 season. Pre-season polls expect them to be powers: Oklahoma and Texas. The Sooners already have three appearances in the CFP semi-finals, and a fourth is certainly in the cards this year. That's, of course, unless Texas has something to say about it. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger may well qualify for the Heisman Trophy. The goals are finally realistic at the highest level after a decade without success.

But what would the Big 12 be without a little chaos? The format of the 10-team preliminaries results in some really exciting finals in November, and there are a handful of outsiders ready to get things moving. Baylor, Iowa State or Oklahoma State could they fail the party? The Big 12 should once again fall in 2019, which would give rise to a wide diversity of opinions. As such, our college football team at CBS Sports sits to provide the selections for the season, including the expected finish order. How does each of our experts see things move? You can see all our choices in the table and explanations below.

Chart from Michael Meredith

Most overvalued team

Texas: It's not like I thought Texas would be bad or anything. They will be pretty good … but good like 8-4 or 9-3. This is not an improvement over last season, which launched the Longhorns in the playoff debate. Of course, quarterback Sam Ehlinger is a playmaker, but can he stay healthy? And I have questions about the rebuilt offensive line and the defense; However, to be honest, Texas has a number of new "starters" who have seen a lot of games last season. Overall, I'm just not as sold as the others on the Horn. – Ben Kercheval (also Tom Fornelli)

TCU: I've seen the horned frogs predict as high as third in the Big 12 this pre-season, but that can be a little optimistic. The quarterback position is a big point of questioning. Mike Collins is the only member of the team who has gaming experience. He is injured. Coach Gary Patterson therefore has the choice between unproven players, Alex Dalton and Michael Collins. Combine that with a schedule including road games with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Iowa State, and an expected rebound year many Horned Frogs fans expect at a hard bet to get. – Jerry Palm (also Dennis Dodd)

Oklahoma: I think Oklahoma is good enough to be back in the college football playoffs and good enough to have another winner of the Heisman Trophy; I certainly think that they are good enough to win another Big 12 title, and I have chosen them to do it. But there seems to be a level of invincibility that has been imposed on the Sooners that I am not yet ready to give to this team. It does not run without opposition here. Last season, Texas was probably the only Big 12 team that was good enough to beat Oklahoma. This year, Texas, TCU and the state of Iowa are God-worthy enough, and I will not inscribe Baylor or the state of Oklahoma for getting closer to that level. While four offensive linemen are gone and a new defensive coordinator needs time to instill his culture, Oklahoma will be tested more this year than in the past two seasons. – Barton Simmons

State of Iowa: I like Matt Campbell and the long-term trajectory of his career at Iowa State – or wherever he might end up after his stint with the Cyclones – but I think the hype has exceeded my expectations for this season . Brock Purdy is a gifted quarterback with a high ceiling, but this attack has lost his leading teammates to last year 's eight – game winning streak. Iowa State is firmly in the midst of the Big 12 group as a strong top-40 team, but repeating the success of the past two years may be more difficult than expected. – Chip Patterson

Oklahoma StateIt's hard to pick a team in the Big 12 that's overrated because I think most of the pre-season predictions are pretty accurate. But for those who think the Cowboys will argue – I do not really see it. The situation of the quarterback is solid, but Spencer Sanders or Dru Brown make the difference? In the Big 12, if you do not have a reliable defense (the Cowboys do not have any), the quarterback must take over to be able to compete legitimately for the Big 12 Championship Game. I'm counting on coach Mike Gundy to keep this team competitive, but that's about all you can expect in 2019. – Barrett Sallee

Most underrated team

State of Iowa: This is not a two – team race in the Big 12 with Texas, Oklahoma and everyone else. The top row now extends up to Ames, in Iowa. Do not be distracted by the loss of skills, stars David Montgomery and Hakeem Butler at the NFL because that's not what's fueling this program. Matt Campbell has built a culture that is growing year by year. It does not hurt that he also starts the second year of the Brock Purdy era, that he returns all his offensive line, that he has recruited two half stars and that he 39, he has stars at all three levels of defense. Make room for iowa State at the big boy's table. – Barton Simmons (also Dennis Dodd, Tom Fornelli)

Baylor: This is a team that went from 1-11 in the first season of Matt Rhule to 7-6 in the second. It will be much more difficult to make this kind of improvement in 2019, but this Baylor team will be better. Charlie Brewer is an underrated quarterback who will become a bigger name this season, they have a lot of talent in attack and a young defense will enter the 2019 season with much more experience. That should lead to more forced turnovers, which the Bears had trouble doing last season. It's a team ready to go up in 2019. – Tom Fornelli (also Ben Kercheval)

Oklahoma State: The Pokes have one of the best receivers in the country at Tylan Wallace, and Mike Gundy is not the kind of coach we expect to see produce consecutive years. After only seven wins a year ago, a course correction is expected to come close to double-digit wins in 2019. – Chip Patterson

TCU: The wounded completely destroyed the Horned Frogs last year, but defensive lineman Ross Blacklock is back after missing the entire season and South Carolina's transfer, Shameik Blackshear, should be a force apart . They are returning five of their top six strikers in a year, the only absence being former quarterback Shawn Robinson. Speaking of quarterbacks, Alex Delton was transferred to Kansas State, but rookie four-star star Max Duggan will soon be a star. You combine it with established star receiver, Jalen Reagor, and the Horned Frogs will be on the program for the title of the conference. – Barrett Sallee

Bold prediction

  • Dennis Dodd: It will be the last year of Matt Campbell at the Iowa State. He will lead a Big Ten program next season.
  • Jerry Palm: Jalen Hurts will have a season-long Heisman Trophy, even if he does not really win it.
  • Tom Fornelli: Four conference teams will finish with three Big 12 wins or fewer.
  • Chip Patterson: Jalen Hurts will win the Heisman Trophy. Lincoln Riley returns to this comfortable position in New York in December, touring the rewards circuit with the best quarterback in the country. Oklahoma won the league and participated in the playoffs, and I think the Hurts will play a big role in this effort.
  • Barton Simmons: An Oklahoma defense that is one of the last three teams in the top 12 in the overall standings for each of Lincoln Riley's first two seasons, will be among the top three teams in 2019.
  • Barrett Sallee: The script will be reversed in the 2019 season. Oklahoma will beat Texas at Red River Rivalry, but will lose to the Longhorns, two losses, at the Big 12 Championship Game. As a result, the Big 12 will retire from the university play-off.
  • Ben Kercheval: Jalen Hurts will start at quarterback during the first week in Oklahoma, but rookie Spencer Rattler will also get his playing time and even start at least one game.

Big 12 arrival order predicts

Big 12 champion

Oklahoma: Oklahoma is attempting to win its fifth straight Big 12 consecutive title. This is the longest winning streak in the Missouri Valley / Big Six / Big Seven / Big Eight / Big 12 since the OU has won 12 in a row from 1948 to 1959. Jalen Hurts could not to win the Heisman, but in the short time we saw it last season, his throws seemed to have improved. In addition, he has the best football whisperer in football as his coach. A resurgent defense under Alex Grinch could be the difference between a fifth straight conference title and another playoff spot. Dennis Dodd (also Jerry Palm, Tom Fornelli, Patterson Chip, Barton Simmons and Ben Kercheval)

Texas: I am not firmly rooted in the Texas camp as a national power, but another year in the system for quarterback Sam Ehlinger, associated with the return of wide receiver Collin Johnson, should make it one of the most powerful of the country. . Perhaps more importantly, Texas has already shown that it can win shootouts and slugfests, which makes it more likely to avoid setbacks in 2019. The scenario will be reversed this season. Texas will lose to Oklahoma in the regular season but will take revenge in the Big 12 Championship match. The only question that arises is whether this will eliminate all of the big 12 college football playoffs. I lean towards "yes". – Barrett Sallee
