White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Thursday that President Donald Trump could propose a tax cut before the 2020 presidential election.
"You can very well witness a new roll-out of additional tax breaks for the middle class and for small businesses," Kudlow said in an interview for Fox Business Network.
Kudlow pointed out that "there is nothing short-term" because "we think the economy is very healthy". "But longer, why not?" he added.
Kudlow also confirmed to CNBC his support for a tax reduction proposal tabled by Senator Rick Scott, R-Fla.
"We had a great conversation with my friend @larry_kudlow yesterday about our economy," tweeted Scott Thursday morning.
"When we get back from the break, we should immediately start working on a plan to lower taxes for families and middle-class workers by the amount the Treasury collects in tariffs," said the senator.
In a text message, Kudlow told CNBC: "I support the proposal" presented by Scott at his meeting. Kudlow did not say he had questioned the president about the plan.
A spokeswoman for the Florida senator said that Scott "has not yet spoken to the president about this proposal, but is asking the administration to immediately start reducing aid costs to help American families."
Kudlow made similar comments to reporters at the White House shortly after his television interview.
Kudlow also told Fox that he was still waiting for Chinese negotiators to meet in Washington with Trump administration officials in Washington in September to pursue trade negotiations.
MPs from Washington and Beijing held a "productive conference call" on Wednesday, he said.
The remarks of the main economic assistant took place during a week of conflicting discussions of the White House on possible tax cuts and other proposals to boost the economy. ;economy.
On Wednesday, Trump said that he "is not considering a tax break now, we do not need it."
This statement seemed totally at odds with the remarks made by the President the day before, when he had told the Oval Office that he "had long thought of payroll taxes".
Less than a day before these remarks, a White House official denied the idea of a reduction in social security contributions: "It is certain that the American people will benefit from additional cuts, but the reduction in social security contributions is not considered for the moment. "
And this denial came in response to the Washington Post's report that White House officials have proposed a reduction in payroll taxes to avert a possible economic slowdown.
When asked on Thursday to provide more details on the possible pre-election tax reduction, Mr. Kudlow said: "I do not want to go into details because I do not want not to pick up speed. "
But he said that "the idea of a solution to reducing payroll taxes in the short term – it does not work, it never works, it has no lasting impact".
He added: "Tax rates for individuals could easily be lowered, and probably the brackets could be reduced." It's a thought. "
And "we could even find a way to help our friends in the state concerned about narrowing tax deductions … SALT taxes," Kudlow said.
But he warned not to take these suggestions as promises. "I'm right – these are examples, agree? Examples," he says.
