Last night I played Microsoft Download Simulator • Eurogamer.net

I am in Microsoft Flight Simulator for the long haul. I followed his slow taxi down the runway until the big takeoff of the Xbox Series X / S yesterday. I expected a few bumps. I’m sure he’ll still hold the landing.

But last night’s launch was a bit turbulent – even with all the pre-flight checks completed. I had the basic game install and the extra offline pack all preloaded (102GB, ouch, but still about half of a Call of Duty: Warzone). Then came a surprise 27GB update on day one. Well, the flights are delayed.

After going through all of this, surely it was all settled. Well no. If I want to go see London or New York or various other world attractions in detail, you need the additional free content packs from their corresponding region. These can be accessed from the already packed Flight Sim in-game store (alongside dozens of paid planes and airports). I couldn’t see how to download these content packs through the standard Xbox Marketplace. I wish there was a way to pre-load them too.

After grabbing the UK Pack and waiting another hour for it to download – it looked like the game’s servers were being hammered, which was understandable – I was finally in the air. London looked brilliant, but other cities were less impressive. The game’s algorithmic building generation looks spotty – again, likely affected by server capacity. Brighton’s impressive Pavillion, for example, looked like a standard American store.

The first day out was always going to be hectic. I imagine there were countless thousands of people like me all trying to immerse themselves in the game since it is part of Xbox Game Pass. And while the console controls of Microsoft Flight Simulator are pretty easy to pick up, I probably should have stuck with the game’s flight school training a bit longer, before heading out on some big tours. tourism.

But I also think I wouldn’t have been the only one to download over 100GB of data just to try and zoom in on my house as close as possible to a real airplane this year. For anyone trying out on console today, download as much as possible in advance and be prepared for the usual delays before the flight.
