Financial details of the Patriots’ new deal with Cam Newton make it clear that New England is leaving their options open when it comes to the quarterback position, and the Jimmy garoppolo the rumblings continue to persist. In a recent appearance on the PFT PM podcast, Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston said a New England-Garoppolo reunion remains a possibility even after Newton’s takeover (via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk).
Of course, the 49ers should make Garoppolo commercially available, and that situation is a bit murky. San Francisco General Manager John lynch said last month that he had no doubts Garoppolo would be his starting QB in 2021, but days later a report surfaced that Jimmy G was still on the trading block.
According to Florio, the Niners continue to look for an upgrade, and if they find one, it’s obvious Garoppolo should be dealt with. Although he will have to give up his no-trade clause, it probably wouldn’t be a problem if San Francisco brings in, or is considering bringing in, a player who could pose a threat to his starting job.
As ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss points out, getting a legitimate contract quarterback was key for the Patriots with the opening of a free agency this week. Although many believe Newton is simply no longer a viable starter, he is still a beloved figure among players, and the Pats – who have some of the biggest salary caps in the league – are active players in the market. . The club have been hooked up to some of the best receivers and tight ends available, and these players probably wouldn’t even consider Foxborough if Jarrett stidham was the only passerby on the list. So, although Newton’s agreement did not assure him of anything, it had to be done.
For his part, Newton expects to take a big step forward in 2021 if he gets the chance. He recently posted a hyped Instagram video promising a return to form next season, and depending on how things are going in free agency and the project, he just might get that chance. If nothing else, the fact that the Pats brought him back suggests that the team thinks he might look more like his old self with a better complement of weapons around him.
