Latest IDC figures reiterate Apple’s dominance in tablet market

Earlier this week, during Apple’s earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said the iPad had had its most successful June quarter in nearly a decade. And now IDC has come out with its latest worldwide shipping figures that underscore Apple’s dominant lead over tablet competition. After refreshing the iPad Air in 2020 and launching an upgraded iPad Pro earlier this year, Apple is expected to update the iPad Mini next.

IDC estimates that Apple shipped 12.9 million iPads in the second quarter. Its closest competitor is Samsung, which has reached 8 million shipments. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S7 tablets offer fantastic hardware and punchy OLED displays, but they remain crippled by the less-than-stellar selection of Android tablet apps. Lenovo, which continues to release well-received Chromebooks and Chrome OS tablets, took third place with 4.7 million units shipped, and Amazon came in fourth with 4.3 million Fire tablet shipments.

PC and tablet shipments have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic as people have adapted to working from home and distance education. IDC figures show Chromebook shipments increased 68.6% year-over-year to 12.3 million units shipped in the second quarter. “While not a record quarter for Chromebooks, it was not far from the previous two quarters, which shattered previous highs,” IDC wrote.

But IDC is signaling a possible slowdown in Chromebook and tablet sales due to continued chip shortages and easing consumer demand as more people return to the workplace or classroom. Apple said supply constraints could be detrimental to iPad sales in the coming months, and the iPhone could be affected as well.
