A man who witnessed a car accident in California and injured eight people said that by approaching the driver side of the car, the man repeatedly said : "thank you Jesus."

Don Draper, of San Jose, said he was enraged after seeing the Toyota Corolla hitting pedestrians at high speed, then crashing into a tree. He says he's headed for the car, ready to confront the driver.

Draper says the driver was squatting on the steering wheel, unharmed. The car was hissing and the airbag had deployed.

Draper said that the driver's speech was not related and that he was not looking at it.

Later, he saw that the driver was out of his car and was lying face down on the lawn.

The authorities have not yet identified the man who drove the Toyota Corolla, but the officers were on Wednesday in an apartment of the car owner in Sunnyvale, about 80 km south of San Francisco.

Sunnyvale police captain Jim Choi said the investigators were still trying to determine a motive in the Tuesday night crash. The FBI says it's attending with the probe.

Choi said some of the eight injured, including a 13-year-old girl, were in a corner or on the pedestrian crossing when the car hit them before crashing into a tree.

Prentice Danner, spokeswoman for the FBI's San Francisco office, said the Sunnyvale Police Department was the body responsible for the investigation. But Danner says that if it is determined that a federal crime has been committed, the office will get more involved.

Sunnyvale Police Cpt. Jim Choi indicates that the driver of the car has been arrested and has been identified but that his name is not made public in order to avoid jeopardizing the investigation.

Authorities in northern California said that one man had been arrested after apparently hurting eight people and deliberately wounding eight, but that one motive was still being investigated.

Sunnyvale Police Cpt. Jim Choi told KPIX-TV that witnesses told investigators that motorists were driving fast and heading straight for pedestrians without trying to turn away or stop the car before hitting pedestrians on Tuesday night.

Choi said that some of the eight injured people were in a corner or on the zebra crossing and that officials should tell motorists to try to avoid them. The department said the pedestrian crossing was closed Wednesday as officials investigated.

He added that officials checked whether the driver had a medical emergency or was deliberately striking pedestrians.
