Sony has released the first firmware update for its recently launched PlayStation 5. The patch notes are short and non-specific, but you might notice an improvement in performance after downloading.
The patch notes for system update 20.02-02.25.00 do not specifically state which areas of the console are addressed, simply stating, “This system software update improves system performance.” The whole update is just about 900MB and is available for download now.
The PS5 launched in the United States, Canada and other regions on November 12, with the launch in Europe this Thursday, November 19. a format to many instances of technical issues with console rest mode. Many GameSpot employees have also encountered these issues personally.
The PS5 could also benefit from a change that removes the PS4 versions of games from the default downloads, which take up unnecessary space on the console’s already small SSD.
There are also a few small tweaks that we would like to see implemented in the future, depending on our time spent with the console so far. The console can make it difficult to run the PS5 version of a game compared to the PS4 version, for example. If you haven’t seen a lot of visual upgrade in your games, it could be a sign that you are playing the wrong version.
If you haven’t upgraded to the next generation yet and are still playing on a PS4, this console just got a firmware update as well. It’s a basic stability update so don’t expect huge changes to your system.
That’s not to say the console isn’t impressive elsewhere. In our PS5 review, reviewer Mat Paget found a lot to like about Sony’s latest console, from the striking rumble of the DualSense to blazingly fast load times. “Sony has laid a solid foundation for its new generation of games,” Paget writes. “But now it’s up to the developers to use all the tools in place so they can build on them.”
