Latest research on the Phillies front office

The future of the Phillies’ front office has been changing since the departure of general manager Matt Klentak in the first week of October. Since that time, president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail and interim general manager Ned Rice have led day-to-day operations, an arrangement that could continue until the end of next season.

However, Philadelphia plans to start interviewing potential candidates next week, reports Athletic’s Jayson Stark. It appears the Phillies are planning to make two hires: a president of baseball operations to lead the department and a new GM to serve as that person’s senior lieutenant.

This type of arrangement has become more and more common throughout the sport, but the Phillies are leaving open the possibility of taking a less typical approach to the hiring process. The Phils would unsurprisingly prefer to hire the team president before turning to GM research, Stark notes. However, this is not a tenure, as Stark suggests the organization could hire the CEO first if circumstances require.

That would be a strange course of action – you’d think any new president would want to have a say in GM’s hiring process – but it’s apparently not out of the question. It is still possible, Stark says, the organization chooses to stop the recruiting process mid-term and allow the MacPhail-Rice couple to continue running the club next year. (MacPhail is generally expected to retire after the 2021 season, but it is possible that a more immediate restructuring will cause him to retire earlier).

Assuming the Phillies commit to finalizing the front office this winter, they could choose to pursue a number of different candidates. The organization leaves open the possibility of pursuing high-profile executives with a past experience in directing baseball operations, as well as considering types of “rising stars” similar to the Angels Perry Minasian’s recent hire, Stark adds. There remains a lot of uncertainty about Phils’ ultimate course of action, but it looks like the process will kick in in the next few days.
