This year, in September and October, Latvia's wind farms contributed twice as much to Latvia's electricity balance as the four previous years in those months, according to the Latvian AS transmission system operator. High voltage network (AST).
In September, the share of wind energy in the balance sheet total was 4.31 or 16,381 MWh, but in October it was 4.06% or 15,851 MWh. The rapid increase in the amount of wind energy produced can be explained by the first storms of autumn. The water supply of the fall of Daugava, hydroelectricity produces less electricity and the percentage of wind energy increases, said BNN to AST.
In August, 7,894 MWh of electricity was generated in the wind farms, representing only 1.7% of the country's total production.
The use of wind in electricity production is directly dependent on the weather and, as a general rule, the greatest amount of electricity produced during the period from October to January is observed. This increase has already begun in September. An increase over the four year period is also observed in October, with the exception of 2017, where the amount of wind energy produced was slightly higher.
