The board of directors of the Latvian Basketball Union discussed the progress of the preparation of the Women's European Championship.

It was found that in the space of two months, it was possible to mobilize a budget of 50,000 euros for sponsorship, as well as a cost reduction of 43,000 euros with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The municipality of Riga made the decision to support the organization of the championship up to EUR 100,000, as provided in the previously approved estimate.

In this context, the budget of the Women's European Championship has a deficit of 196 000 EUR.

Valdis Voins, President of LBS:

"Since the autumn of 2018, we have repeatedly informed the Ministry of Education and Science, the National Sports Council and the government of the cost of the organization of the championship. Unfortunately Despite unofficial promises, requests for additional funds from LBS were rejected, ignoring the argument that the European Championship in Latvia would have a positive effect on the Latvian economy, which had been previously defined by the NSP as one of the criteria to support the organization of major international competitions.

In order to ensure the success of the European Championship, the LBS Bureau will examine the possibilities of borrowing the missing funds and will ask the LBS Council to accept such a decision. We will convene the LBS Board of Directors until the beginning of the European Championship.

LBS will make every effort to ensure that the Women's European Championship in Riga complies with FIBA standards and with Latvia's excellent reputation as a top international organizer in the international sports community. At the same time, we believe that the lack of constructive communication of public authorities for more than six months bears witness to serious shortcomings in the management of the sports industry, as well as irresponsibility and disrespect. incompetence of "responsible" officials.
