The court of the suburbs of Riga, Latgale, on Monday rejected a request for early release of an imprisonment sentence handed down by Anša Ataola Berzina, sentenced to death on January 13, 2009.
A court decision may be challenged in the Riga Regional Court within ten days. After Berzins hearing, attorney Jānis Mucenieks said at the hearing that the issue of early release of Berzins was discussed at the hearing and that representatives of the central prison Riga, SPD and Berzins were heard. It has already been stated that Berzins was also counted as months spent in detention while he was behind bars in the Czech Republic, Berzins' lawyer being informed by the LETA agency. The Czech Republic was arrested on March 31, 2017 and his court was sentenced to one year in prison and eight months. So, Berzins is facing punishment until November 30 this year.
The Berzins defender also made a repeated request for apology to President Raimonds Vējonis, but no response has been received to date. The president did not call the first such request. In March, after meeting with Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (ZZS), Vējonis told reporters that she would not regret Berzins.
The President explained that he did not expect to forgive Berzina, justifying his decision that Latvia was a strong and legitimate state. respect for the law and the court. He recalled that 68 people have received various punishments, and in fact, all people have pbaded these sentences.
Berzins was sentenced to a probation period suspended for one year and eight months for participation in the rites of Old Riga on January 13, 2009. Berzins was also responsible for supervising the SPD, but he did not respect it and the SPD did not appear, which changed the decision of the court and replaced the conditional sentence with effective deprivation of liberty
Berzins then decided to leave Latvia in a "political exile". . In these circumstances, Berzins was announced in an international search in early 2016 and was arrested in the Czech Republic in the spring of 2017.
