The heat wave in the province of Quebec, Canada, stole 54 people, reports the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation CBC.

With respect to health facilities, the CBC reports that only 28 people died in Montreal on Friday night.

Many of those who died were over the age of 65 and had chronic physical or mental health problems, reports the broadcaster.

"The increase in the number of deaths was due to the effect of heat on the body, especially the elderly and those suffering from chronic diseases," said the Ministry of Health, adding that the heat it also accumulates in buildings.

The air temperature in Quebec has reached 34 degrees Celsius, ten degrees higher than usual in the region this year.

But on weekends, meteorologists promise a cooler weather, which could spell the end of the heatwave.
