In the last year, 393 new HIV cases were recorded for the first time in Latvia. During the first six months of this year, 129 new cases of infection were recorded.

In Latvia, among the so-called first registered patients, the majority are between 25 and 45 years old, women and men, more than half of whom are infected by heterobadual relationships. This means that no one can become an HIV patient without a dependent, worker, with only one badual partner. Since October 2009, the country has lifted restrictions on the provision of antiviral treatment to HIV patients, which is very important, because early treatment is very important, not only for the successful treatment of existing patients, but also for reducing the prevalence of HIV. Unfortunately, the number of HIV-positive mothers in Latvia is also increasing every year. Contrary to popular belief and popular myths, these women often do not have intravenous drug users or bad workers. Latvia has the highest number of HIV-infected children in the European Union – there are currently 66 HIV-positive children, three of whom were infected last year, but this year does not exception to the rule – two HIV-positive children have already been registered. This year will also be the charity concert organized by Agihas. I, you, him, her, us … You are the next, which will take place on December 1 at 18:30, in the Anglican Sv. Church of the Savior in Riga. As part of the concert, the Glasta Award will be presented as an important contribution to limiting the spread of HIV infection. Author sculptor Olga Šilova.
