This Saturday, July 28, Brainstorm will perform in Valmiera, then the concerts will take place in Ventspils (August 3) and Daugavpils (August 11), while the final agreement will take place August 17 in the new reconstruction. But it is not history: this group has long been a difficult phenomenon to understand in Latvian music and life in general, since each of its movements in the public space is perceived as a national event. And it's so – Brainstorm can be loved or hated, but we do not have better bands and we probably will not be there for long. On the other hand, the impressive shows of spirits are largely the responsibility of the person who seems the least noticeable, since he sits at the very end of the stage – the drummer and director Kaspars Roga.
– So … If we're talking about concerts in Riga, it started many years ago at Skonto Stadium, there was a conversation before the concert of Jelgava
after the great number of great tours Brainstorming? Mežaparks 1, Mezaparks 2, and then Skonto, still on the territory of Pulkveža Brieža Street, arrives at the sixth! Wow, I'm surprised, I do not even think much!
– Did you know that Brainstorming concerts are not only an event in Latvian concert life, but in the life of Latvia in general? We are doing our best, and PapaChi [režisors Aivars Čivželis] with whom we all formed this time, said that brainstorming is a kind of phenomenon or exception that has reached such a national status that we no longer I do not really have to worry about it. He has so ridiculously compared the architectural monument, which is somewhere and has existed for years, but if you want to change something, it's not necessary to do anything because there's has prescriptions that must remain as they are. Everyone in this monument has their own opinion and everyone seems to belong to it (laughs). Of course, brainstorming is a responsibility, we understand it, but we also try to prevent this awareness from influencing the creative flight from a certain point of view. self-censorship. We did not choose the chocolate ice cream, which was a bit more spicy, because we thought that puritan families would start to attribute chauvinism or badism to us – nothing was there yet, but everything seems like little different on the screen of 18 meters. Well, be different.
– But then, do not you have to rest? You would like to realize your thoughts that way, but you have to think about what Aunt Bauska's modern aunt says
– Renard [Kaupers] once said that we, as a group and also in the interior from our office, are small world micromodel: If you want to understand what is the reaction to a creative attempt, bring it and drop it in the office on the table. And you will get opinions from all social groups because we are all represented in our office. This is a good sunflower paper. Such tests help because there is always more success or less success, but we must admit that we do not always do it. Too enthusiastic about this type of evaluation, you can lose the backbone of your personality, but some limits must be kept to preserve the energy of the group.
– We tried to build a tour around the drum. I was very touched by this film, therefore, we started with PapaČi to build the whole story. First of all, there was a scene, and only then a vision of what it was about. Probably in some ways, it borders a traveling circus, but just as well, it can be imagined as a fair. But it may be a romantic feeling from a distant past. The common feeling is … how to describe it … it creates strange but very warm feelings. Recognize the emotions that exist in each of us. Maybe it's a return to childhood, or, as Renard says, everyone here finds the little boy sitting on the drums. Who does both pranks, and is also a fighter and a pedestrian.
– Okay, well, which of you is no longer a mischief ?! You are over forty.
– Yes, but that's why we also want to wake up with the boy. For groups that have existed for so long, this kind of reboot, a kind of self-exaltation, is needed from time to time. If not, then start roaring and stagnating. And become a clbadic (laughs). Is brainstorming disabled? I think the last album helped us a lot. The Swedes, whose one will be on stage as a percussionist, have given us the momentum to creatively entertain the recording process. We had it somehow. For the last album, we have a very good feeling – that the spirit of this time is caught up. We play pop music, we are a group of MPs, and do not hesitate to do it – that's all.
– About the staging process – what's going on? I've heard that a lot of songs came in the evening and then had to edit and write ideas, but what about the directors?
– It's also these ideas that come around four or five in the evening. If waking up in the morning and this idea is still [galvā] then that means it was worth it, if not, then – no. When I have the courage to write ideas and debts to the rest of the caretaker or the cafe on the briefcase, the legend of these bursts is already entered. Look what they say. They say – Oh, that's cool, it's a good idea, so I know we're on the right track.
– But if they say, old man, will you go to bed?
– Yes, that's it. but anyway we come to a single result. Here, however, it is on paper (shown during the scene), then slowly we come to the realization of the idea.
– At concerts, colleagues in the group sometimes became interested in specific images, such as Jānis Jubalts who, for Spoiler, at the initiative of his director, had to reflect the mirror at the time. running a big ball. How to convince them that they should do this?
– Jancho is always foggy, but in the end he loves everything, and he also does a lot. In reality, the scene is very vast and they must survive in one way or another. Fox with John is the only one who is not attached to the wires – now we are making Marie Mihelson more mobile as he will have a synthesizer in the neck to be able to fly freely somewhere. Normally, from the point of view of dramaturgy, we also create a concert so that one of its sections is also formed on another stage. This time, almost all participants will be involved in the video content that will be shown on the screens and will be there as an actor. For us, it was a very interesting creative moment.
– This is a very special challenge for you this time: there was a song festival on the Great Scene of Mezapark and then, just before Brainstorm, a Brainstorm concert.
– It's a great honor for us to have Permit to speak at all. Well, then, for the Brainstorm to come together as a treat for a party, put a ball (laughs). When the official game is over and you can go out, then go ahead and build a bright future (laughs). Something in the air, too, we will crush, shine or what, will not be so calm.

– How did the band's manager manage to slow down his performances? leading ideas? is very painful, but we always come to a compromise. Of course, it's financially very, very expensive. However, the light companies and her, with whom we have been working for many years, are burning for this thing, and it's nice. It is good that there is a large crowd of people, and we have about 350 people on this tour, working for a common goal. And the goal is simple: celebrate people! In addition, ticket prices for this level show are not so high. We are very accessible because we also think to see as many people as possible. We can already put the price of the ticket at one hundred euros, but then this concert would not have been seen by more than ten thousand people.
– But who needs such investments ?! I should go to Brainstorm even if you would spend the whole show just sitting on the stools!
– Yes. But now, maybe a little Latvian boy will see everything, will inspire and, after twenty years, will see the first big Latvian superstar in the world of music! Because these are the inspiring objects of my time – the U2 and Depeche Mode concerts. I was so impressed by the fact that something could happen on this scale, so wide and interesting, he wanted to do something for me! It seems to me that brainstorming is a good example of what can be done in Latvia. I would be very happy to see that one of the younger generation musicians finally managed to call Latvia, so rich! – "If it is not for ourselves" … Does this mean that the Brainstorm has rejected the great expectations regarding the vast markets Western?
– No. We have been working in this field for a long time. For example, I do not remember the name of an online broadcast site – it turns out that in Poland we hear even more than in Latvia. And not for a single Maybe, but just for the last album. In Eastern Europe, the Brainstorm brand is still very familiar and recognizable to people, and we are quite understandable in this area, and our presence is felt in some places. In Western Europe, of course, is different. If we do not count Latvia and the Baltic States, then Russia has the biggest market for us – that's a fact. But, speaking of the international market, we appreciated our own skin that there is nothing impossible. Of course, in the pop genre, there is the biggest competition and the strongest words are there, the other niches must survive more easily. What to compete with – Coldplay and U2, other clbad A artists ?! It is a complicated task.
– But how are you in Russia now?
– Very good! Until now, we have gone through several festivals to warm up the Latvian tour, besides, we were in the status of hedlainers – if that's the case, then there are some indications. At the end of the year, we are organizing a big concert in Moscow, Crocus City Hall. Let's try to bring something here or something from what we are currently showing in Latvia. About politics … This is not the end or the edge. If that's the case, I can not even get out of Engure! I would not be able to drive to Ventspils, I could not go to Riga to play, because someone could settle somewhere. If you choose to be a music politician, then get in the habit of giving yourself a head, but if you choose the path of the musician, then sing and play, do it in the best conscience, because the message of peace and love. If we can bring joy to anyone, no matter who and in any country that came to the concert, let him rest and go home in good spirits, so we do not even ask for anything else. We are not preachers. I will not have anything else to say. If that does not please someone, then put us at Raimondu Paulo, Intaru Busuli, Laima Vaikuli and Riga Dinamo in a heavy machine and go into the forest! And then take the other machine in which [Kristapu] Portions and others working in America are badembled. Maybe then everyone will be finally happy (laughs).
– What do you still feel in your school of micro-collection, which is the school?
– I think we have a very good subordination. For example, at least ten years in a tour, we live in every room. Before that, we lived in two rooms in one room, but for a while, we realized that it remains difficult – one wants to sleep twice, the other to get up in seven, and so on. These small equipment and the means to increase their private space help to survive in the long run. If we look at that in numbers, we are together half a year. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, we are at home, then Thursday we are already flying somewhere and back to late Sunday night. It would be hard to blame if we did not meet during these three days to at least relax and spend time with our families. People who work from Monday to Friday in their collectives are not too busy relaxing with their colleagues on the weekends. It happens, it happens to us, there are also various celebrations and celebrations that we spend together. And yet – the secret of longevity is to respect each private space. How much, of course, is possible. So, after the moments of musical composition and interpretation, there are moments of loneliness and unity on which you can think, where you go, where you go, and so on.
– Everyone is stranger, everyone has their own interests. Does this not affect the activities of the group – directly from the human point of view?
– You are absolutely right! And it's just normal. Over the years, the faces of the personality and his habits are changing, and more and more, we are starting to see who is who – the rest for the emphatic, the other remains completely calm, the other maybe differently. Also with activities. For example, Renar is delighted to play acoustic and semi-acoustic projects in various acoustic and semi-acoustic projects, he participates in the recording of children's music where he joins his guitar and he is master in various sports extremes. Husbands, in turn, take care of his rural property, an hour and a half behind Smiltene, and occupies the composition. Man – cinema For these concerts, we chose the video sequence, and I will immediately propose my first documentary film. It will be like my old friend: twenty years ago, at his wedding, he went bankrupt, he went to Africa, and so on. With my girlfriend a while back we went and I was so impressed with what I saw there! He lived at the edge of the ocean in Sierra Leone, but it was so beautiful! I did a documentary on diamond mining, something about it, but on one it was also a parable of the soul.
– Cases … But in the Brainstorm your basic duties are a drummer! How do you do with this thing?
– Yes, it's really interesting when it comes to those who really are (laughs). When you have done a thing for so long, then you already have the idea to try what life you can, because you are more versatile! Am I a Kaspars Roga – a drummer? Who am I, Aija? (He is in a hurry, he needs an internal director – who are you – a crazy chapel! – reads the answer). About the drums I play this time on a day when there is a more regular diet and there are concerts. For me, it works like morning racemes – I played drums, I paved trophies and I feel good. But now there are these big concerts, so the big attempts are about five hours. After that, there is a way to do good sport.
– The drum parts do not seem so complicated to decipher as they are in brainstorming …
– No, I do not consider myself a virtuoso either. But I am very happy that we have seen so many masters of percussion instruments in Latvia. For example, Nellia Bubujanca will join us in a concert at Daugavpils – percussion in her games. Excellent master! I'm really happy that we have players of this level in Latvia that I do not even have the ability to master, while I practice the storyboarder at a high level!
– The last question – how did I understand that I am no longer a Rigan? I come from Engure! From A to Z! I was not born there, but somewhere there. I had friends there, we started to rest during the summer and I settled there. At present, there are cafes and pizzerias with [mūziķi] Don and cafe co-owners of Ģirtu Upes milk, but that's all. The dish of paradise, if someone wants to sit somewhere, drink a beer and play ping-pong (laughs). Sea – this time was the decisive factor. Will we be able to meet the retiree's home after many years? Eu, you're probably right! As such, I'm going to sit on a chair with a big belly and something on the side of a bubbling cashier (laughs)!
