Latvian road cyclist Krist Neiland almost left the day before the stage where fifth place was won in the prestigious Giro d'Italia multi-purpose cycling circuit.
It has already been reported that Neiland, 24, finished his second round of Italia in 100th place. The race ended Sunday with the 21st stage, while the cyclists had crossed more than three thousand five hundred kilometers in three weeks.
Neiland is getting ready for the season in Spain, but after a short trip, go home to meet relatives and friends.
"Tuesday, I spent two hours training in peaceful rest. I just took advantage of the nice weather on the steering wheel and shouted. At present, the weather conditions in Latvia are similar in Spain, but the terrain is not conducive to training. The Giro d'Italia has about five days of rest. If there is a good free time, I come with a wheel that I can not really consider as a workout. If you run for three weeks doing nothing, the body will no longer understand what is happening. Just revive the body so that he will remember that the wheel is not gone, "Neiland explained to describe his weekly program after the Italian tour.
"I'll be back in the race next week. Probably, it will be a Hungarian tour, but then there will be Belgian clbadical competitions, of the UCI category – quite high before the Latvian championship. It is only after the Latvian championship that there will be more rest, "said the cyclist.
As last year, Neiland's professional continental unit during the Israeli cycling academy tour kicked off with a special invitation from the organizers.
"My goal was the Giro d'Italia, and I focused on this project since the end of last season. I knew that there would be a great chance to do an Italian tour. The beginning of the season is subordinated only to the Giro d'Italia. I went to the race in very good shape, I was very well prepared and everything was perfect. However, during the tour, colds and unpredictable diseases. At that time, it seemed like all the work done was in the wind because if the body is not 100% healthy, it can not work and does not give a good result, " said the groom.
The most critical moment was the turn of the last and last week of the Giro d'Italia, when the Latvian nearly left the main race of his season due to illness.
"15. and the 16th stage was very hard – if I had such a feeling before another race, I would not leave at the start. The state of health was such as it was. There was a holiday between the 15th and 16th stages, so at the 15th stage, I went to the start with the hope that the day would survive and that the health would be settled on vacation. During a rest day with team doctors, we tried to put our health in order. The next step was healthier, but it was still not a good feeling. At stage 16, I felt better at the last hour than during the first four hours of the stage. However, I was at the border, I almost left home, "recalls Neilands.
Wednesday, the cold had already dissipated. The Latvian cyclist from the 17th stage took part in the race of the day and took fifth place.
"Sports director [Niki Serensens] I'm motivated to continue, saying that everything would be fine the next day. After the finish, I told him that I felt better and that in any case, at the 17th stage, I was thrown back, because there was nothing left to lose – I was really getting ready for the bike race of the Giro d'Italia. I would be able to drive – I will not be – fall or take off from the race. I came home and felt amazingly well. I am very happy to have won fifth place and at least something has succeeded because of the black stripes. In the 17th stage, I gave up everything, so the remaining stages were survival in order to complete the tour, "Neiland said.
At the end of the stage, Neiland had the opportunity to take his place on the podium, but the spear gave way to David David Formolo ("BORA – hansgrohe") and Fausto Masnad ("Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec").
"In closing, I was not so sure of my victory in the race. The last hill was over 1600 meters above sea level. I think the high altitude effect was a little off. When the trio arrived at the end, I was pretty sure that they would not be away. 600 meters before the finish, I tried to escape, but at the last corner, I made a mistake and they caught me. It was all over, "said Neilands.
The team at the Israeli Cycling Academy did not get the highest rank in the overall standings, but its goal in the circuit was to win one of the stages.
"The strongest pressure was put on three riders: I, the Spanish Puvas and our Italian sprinter David David Chimol. With Sprint, we worked on Chimol, which was six times in the top ten.On the remaining stages, Plas and I had the opportunity to struggle for a break.Of course, there were opportunities for other runners, but the focus was on us.So, before each step, we we talked about what we will do and work, "said the Latvian cyclist.
Neiland before the start of the "Tour of Italy", the "Vuelta Asturias Julio Alvarez Mendo" (UCI kat.2.1) lasted three days in Spain. The general clbadification was second behind Rihard Karapasa ("Movistar"), crowned a few weeks later for the Italian tours. champion. Ecuador Karapbad "Giro d'Italia" was not mentioned among the main candidates for victory.
"Personally, I did not consider it my favorite. However, it was clear that he could enter six. This is not a surprise to me because you never know anything about cycling. Before that, I started competing in Spain, where the Movistar unit had participated in the composition of the Giro d'Italia. Seeing how they drove, it was clear that the team was well prepared for the Italian tour. I can not compare myself to them, I still have to grow, "Neiland concluded.
The Latvian champion in a group race in a team based in Israel represents the third consecutive season and is satisfied with its growth.
"I am very good in the team, that 's one of the reasons I have extended the contract. The unit takes good care of its riders and offers opportunities. It's nice to see that the team is growing every year and is on the safe side, "said the cyclist.
This year, the World Championship will be held at the end of September in Yorkshire, where cyclists will have a rather difficult track during a group trip.
"I was looking at the eye track. The field seems to be one of the worst championships in the world in recent years. However, I think it is very convenient for me, for Tom Skujin and for Emil Liepins. If we go to the championship by triples, we can all show something interesting, "said Neilands, who made his debut in the elite group of the world championship.
He is the Latvian champion of the previous two seasons during a group trip. This year, the Latvian championship will take place in the Kuldiga family of Neiland.
The Latvian cyclist "Giro d'Italia" took part in the bike race for the second consecutive year, taking 25th place among the young riders, as well as points for the sprinter and the royal royal.
He made his debut in Latvia last year, when he won 73rd overall and 16th in the young rider competition.
Fifth place in Neiland this year is not the record of Latvia in the stages of the "Giro d'Italia", since during the Italian tour, Pyotr Ugrjumov and Romans Vainšteins were victorious.
