The picketing takes place in the context of the amendments to the Animal Protection Act and the Veterinary Medicine Act which are to be discussed today at the Saeima National Commission for Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy. . Animal advocates draw attention to the fact that the Animal Protection Act and the Veterinary Medicine Act, being amended by the Saeima, provide for the removal of the article of the law which prohibited to "a person to detain an animal if it has been punished for the cruel treatment of the animal" and will allow the continuation of the activity of breeders without registering allowing them to operate in the free underground tax free zone by maintaining a farm with unregistered commercial activity and exchanging unregistered dogs.

As a result, Animal Advocates – 24 animal welfare organizations – have submitted to the Saeima concrete proposals for amendments to animal protection and veterinary legislation, aimed at preventing situations in which unregistered dogs and cats are neither controlled nor regulated. In addition, animal advocates want to prevent animal refuges from being allowed to return animals to old or young hosts, mark / registration, and that most people in the country can not afford to register. a dog.

The proposals submitted to the 13th Saeima of the Animal Welfare Organization also provide for the imposition of a mandatory additional sentence – the confiscation of the animal and / or the prohibition of keep animals – for people punished for animals. Activists also suggest other changes.
