In mid-July, the state police of the Lielvarde region went to a spectacular illegal cigarette factory, informed the national police. The security forces withdrew 13.6 million illegal cigarettes and nine tons of tobacco. In connection with the incident, nine parties were arrested.
In July of this year, the inspector of the district branch of the police of the city of Riga State Police had lifted for a possible illegal cigarette production in the Lielvarde region. At night, Friday, July 13, Ogre district police arrived at this address to conduct a search. As a result, police detected the production of illegal cigarettes in large volumes in two interconnected hangars. There was a cigarette manufacturing plant and a spacious storage room. The cigarette production plant was modernized to produce as many cigarettes as possible in a short time
The big factory also had its own power station.
The rooms were also located in Angara. Employees hid their criminal activities carefully and, in order not to focus on the environment, almost all of them stayed inside, ate and slept.
During the search, the police generally found and removed 13.6 million cigarettes without excise stamps from the Republic of Latvia, about nine tons of tobacco and two tons of diesel fuel. Similarly, seized raw materials – cigarette paper and filters.
There are currently nine people arrested. Each of the detainees committed a crime. One of them was sentenced in advance for robbery, while another was charged with tax evasion.
Regarding the opening of criminal proceedings on the storage or illegal sale of tobacco products, if this is done to a large extent and if it is committed by an organized group. For such crimes, the law provides for deprivation of liberty for up to five years or temporary deprivation of liberty, forced labor or a fine by seizing property or confiscating property.
Four of the detainees have a security measure depriving them of their liberty, while others have a non-custodial security measure.
This is already the second illegal cigarette factory, which the police took over last month in the vicinity of Ogre, and to this day – the most ambitious. In late June, the officers of the economic crimes administration of the main criminal police of the state police in the Ogre district went to a more modern illegal cigarette factory. Then eight million illegal cigarettes and 12 tons of tobacco were seized.
