Nemiro admitted that previous governments had done wrong by involving a working group on this topic. "I think it's a way of burying the idea rather than solving it. This issue has been fooled for a very long time, so this year we want to make a decision. But there is no solution yet, "said the Minister of Economy.
In his view, the future of LMT and Lattelecom should be addressed at the level of the shareholders of both companies, namely the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Transport and the Swedish company Telia.
"There are two levels to deal with this issue – the shareholders and the management of both companies, and there are different views on both these levels, and I think that the future of both companies should be addressed in the future. shareholder level, "said the Minister of Economy.
Until now, Nemiro was discussing the future of LMT and Lattelecom separately with representatives of the Minister of Traffic, Tali Linkait (JKP) and Telia, but no solution has yet been found before a joint meeting of all shareholders. "Let's hear the vision of all shareholders on the future of both companies and agree on a vision for future development," adds Nemiro.
Asked whether the shareholders could decide on the merger of LMT and Lattelecom, the Minister of the Economy admitted that such a scenario was not envisaged at the moment, but that It was not excluded.
"At the moment, I am not negotiating the merger of the two companies, but I wish to speak to other shareholders about this issue and other issues. Before deciding on a merger, you must know the benefits. If we do not see the benefits, we will no longer consider this proposal. The merger is not an end in itself, "said the Minister of Economy.
According to Nemiro, the most important questions he will discuss with the other shareholders of LMT and Lattelecom will be: how to provide more user-friendly services and how to promote the development of both companies.
"When everything is set up, we will see a direction, but for the moment, we do not know it, because it has not yet been decided by the shareholders," said the Minister of Economy .
Telia is the largest shareholder of LMT, directly and indirectly holding approximately 60%. Telia also owns 49% of Lattelecom's shares.
In 2018, according to preliminary data, the Lattelecom group achieved a turnover of 212 million euros, or 8% more than the previous year, while the profits of the group s & # 39; 39, amounted to 42 million euros.
In 2018, LMT achieved a consolidated turnover of 216 million euros, or 6% more than the previous year, but the profit of the group reached 29 million euros. .
