In Poland, protests take place against the reform of the justice system, which provides for the forced retirement of Supreme Court judges.
Malgožata Gersdorf, Chief of the Supreme Court of Poland, also attended the demonstration, which compared the reform to the "cleansing" of judges in rank: "I would like to thank you for pbading on the Supreme Court. The newly enacted law stipulates that all Supreme Court judges over the age of 65 must retire.
The conservative state government insists that reforms are needed to fight corruption and reform the judicial system that is not yet free from the communist regime's heritage.
However, both the Polish opposition and Brussels believe that such reforms jeopardize democratic principles and the rule of law. Under the new law, the European Commission this week launched a procedure against Poland that could deprive Warsaw of the right to vote in the Council of Ministers of the European Union.
