The position of Director General of the SRS became vacant following the sudden death of SRS Director General Ilze Cīrule on the night of 10 March. His service had been running since November 2016. The competition had been announced for the post of head of the SRS, in which former Latvian television board member Māris Skujins had been elected, but he had withdrawn his candidacy after having publicly expressed concerns about his reputation. Skujin rejected both concerns, calling them "a false campaign".
In mid-August, the State Chancellery announced the reopening of a public competition for the Director General of the SRS. The Competition Commission on Tuesday, November 20, revealed that Yeva Jaunzeme, who had been working at the Ministry of Economy for six years, was responsible for the Competition Council for the selection of the SRS General Director for the competition selection.
